We all know Albert Einstein as the man who shocked the world with his groundbreaking theories. But who is he really? Why is he known as the father of modern physics? How were his theories so important to the world of physics?
Born in Württemberg, Germany, young Einstein was a genius at mathematics and physics, reaching a level of mathematics far beyond the grasp of his seniors. At a young age, he taught himself algebra, calculus and Euclidean geometry. Max Talmud, a family tutor, said that within a short period of time after giving young Einstein a geometry textbook, the boy "had worked through the whole book. He thereupon devoted himself to higher mathematics ... Soon the flight of his mathematical genius was so high I could not follow.". Einstein's love and passion for mathematics led him to believe that nature could be understood as a mathematical structure.
In 1905, Einstein published his Annus Mirabilis papers in the Annalen der Physik scientific journal. These papers are four articles pertaining to the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special theory of relativity and E = mc^2. These four articles go on to solve the biggest mysteries in the world of physics, changing the views on space, time and matter completely and even building a foundation for modern physics.
When Einstein published his general theory of relativity, the world was shocked. The theory itself was groundbreaking and the fact that it was published by a young man was absolutely shocking. At first, many people tried to debunk his theory, claiming that it was false, but after the theory was proven, Albert Einstein rose to fame, becoming a celebrity scientist. At some point, Einstein grew tired of people running up to him on the streets, asking him to explain 'that theory'. His solution to this was to pretend to be someone else by saying "Pardon me, sorry! Always I am mistaken for Professor Einstein."
Albert Einstein died on 18 April 1955 at the age of 76 from internal bleeding caused by the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Einstein refused surgery in the hospital saying: " I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly".
